The quotation which heads your piece is perfect. Our institutional forms of education are not built around the child as "someone" but one of many of the same.

So right. We always hear people say to children what they think they will be when they grow up. We do often forget that a child is in fact something right now. And, that something is very, very delicate. We have to really choose our words well. Thanks for a great post.

I loved this post. I have 2 daughters that are budding writers and it is so fun to see what they come up with. I love encouraging this kind of creativity. I, too, tell my children that age is nothing to accomplishments. If you sew you are a seamstress, if you write you are a writer and everyone can always improve on whatever they are learning. Good post!!

Excellent post. Young people are far, far more able than many people believe. The vast majority of the problems that we have with young people is because we keep young adults in the trap of childhood.

WOW! That hit a chord in me. Don't focus on who they will become but who they are now.
I still sometimes struggle. It is an inner struggle. I believe it comes from years of being told that children need to know x by this time. It comes from years of my schooling and possibly not measuring up. It comes from society, commercials, teachers, family and the list goes on. Thank you for giving me something to work with. I do stand back but inside I am right beside them, prodding them to learn more. Learn faster. I need my inner self to feel the same way as I act. Relax. Thank you from a fellow unschooler :)

What a gem. Thanks for reminding me of something that you'd think would be obvious, but is surprisingly easy to forget!

I love this reminder to live in the present and that our kids are valid human beings as they currently are. I have a 7 month old son and he, like all of us, is and is becoming.
