Letting Go Of Food Control

Letting Go Of Food Control

I know that some of you just starting out with unschooling, have a hard time understanding how a child who is able to make their own food choices, will choose healthy foods on their own. The misconception is if you give up food control, they’ll live on cookies and soda. I want to offer a quick glimpse into our lives with something that happened the other day.

I went grocery shopping and bought some snacks for my family; chocolate cookies, sour cream & onion potato chips, rainbow sherbet, grapes and baby carrots. My 12 year old unschooler came into the kitchen and I showed her the snacks I bought. Her immediate response? “Ooooooo – grapes!!!!”. Smile

Out of all those snacks, the grapes were the first to be finished.

What was last? The cookies.

Now I’m not saying this happens all the time…sometimes the cookies go first. And that’s okay! The point is, she chooses healthy foods on her own, without any bribery or coercion.

This was not meant to be a long post, just a little snippet of our day that i wanted to share. Here is another post I wrote about letting go of control.

I often do platter-dinner for the children and it always amazes me how the ‘healthy’things are chosen before the rest. Totally agree that children can learn to listen to their bodies – although I also have one child who is absolutely mad for sugar and I do have to regulate this a little!
If we are out for a rare-treat bought lunch the usual choice is sushi (for the 8 year old) and subway (for the 5 year old). can’t complain about that.

I remember doing this with both my kids back in the 80′s and 90′s, as they were growing up. My daughter chose more vegetarian, and my son chose a high protein diet. What really flattered me was that more than anything they could eat out, or buy premade from the store, they badgered me to cook the things they loved, like homemade chicken nuggets and rice krispie chicken and so on and so forth, and for snacks…there was nothing like the cookies I made! I love them for that!

My daughter went thru the system, and my son left the system after 4th grade. He tells me now that it was me letting him choose his path of developement that kept his spirit alive!

Both children are wonderful human souls! My son, after leaving the system, home/unschooled until I was not needed anymore in that capacity. My children are adults now, and unschooling is in my encouraged horizon for my granddaughter!
