Send in Your Stories of Self-Directed Learning

Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology at Boston College, writes a self-education column for Psychology Today’s website. His columns have been linked to and discussed on numerous unschooling blogs and lists and there’s a good chance you may have read one of his columns yourself. He wrote a column today asking for submissions.

“I would love to hear and perhaps share your stories, which can be about your children, others you know, or you. Your stories may be a great source of inspiration for other readers”.

Here are some of the topics he’s interested in hearing more about:
Learning to read without schooling
Learning math without schooling
From play to careers
Becoming an expert through one’s own initiative
Age-mixed play and friendships: Contributions to children’s and adolescents’ learning
Roles of adults in children’s and adolescents’ self-directed learning.
Fantasy play: Listening to little actors and directors.
Making and enforcing rules at home

Fun Monday Submission

I decided to take part Fun Monday this week. The question for this week is:

I would like to know, or see, what’s on, in or under your bedside table! So open those draws and bare your soul to us! Is there anything special there that has a story or a memory that you can tell us about? Books that you keep there to delve into from time to time? Trinkets that you don’t know where else to put? Let’s see!

On both sides of our king size bed, my husband & I have two black, glass top tables. The one on my side has my middle-of-the-night must haves. My skin tends to dry out more when it’s winter and the heat is on and I need my Lubriderm and chapstick nearby. Tissues are a must because I’m a sneezer. There’s also an alarm clock that I hardly use. lol

My husband Billy doesn’t really use his table. Our phone is there and a bear in a wicker chair that he gave me before we got married. That little orange notebook is something that we started over ten years ago. We’ll write love notes to each other in it and leave the book in a place where the other will find it. Each entry is dated and it’s been really nice to go back and read some of the things we wrote years ago. We keep it on that table until we want to write in it. That white basket underneath holds all the things that have to do with my mothers recent death. It has all the mass cards, sympathy cards, extra prayer cards, etc. Eventually it’ll be boxed away but I’m not ready yet.

And for those who may wonder…yes, our walls are red. Our bedroom is done in black, red and mirrors and is, shall we say, somewhat x-rated. lol

Wordless Wednesday

Here’s my entry for Wordless Wednesday.

This tiny, two inch vase is holding flowers my nine year old daughter/soul mate/mini-me picked and gifted me with. The vase itself was a gift from a thrift shop owner, whose store I was shopping in. For a while now, I had been looking for a very small vase to hold flowers that my daughters pick for me and I was happy to find one in a thrift shop last month. It wasn’t priced so when I brought my load of treasures to the register, I asked him how much it was. He said he wanted me to have it, as a gift, which I gratefully accepted and thanked him for.

It really is the little things that matter.

What family traditions or customs would you most like to see preserved?
In the last few years (because of moving to another state and also adopting three children) we’ve set aside some traditions, changed some to suit our current life and started some new ones. With my mother recently gone, we’re sure to be going though another change this year.

What do you feel is the least sexy part of the body?
I’m not into feet.

What keeps you awake at night? Why?
My husband.
Because after 13 years of being married, he’s still frisky.

Main Course: Name something you are picky about.
Tuna fish. I have to make it myself and rarely eat it out. It has to be solid white and only in water. Also, I like chopped up lettuce in it and mixed only with Hellman’s mayonaisse.

Dessert: Fill in the blanks: I ____ ____ yesterday and I ____ ____ today.
I made out with my husband yesterday and I did it again today.
