To this day I still use this to refer to people who have an issue with us homeschooling. Usually they either never say anything again, or they become impressed with what we do. :)

I love the approach that home school mom's take to real life training for life. It just makes since. After all, educating kids just how to pass test won't help them win people over or problem solve.

Thanks for sharing that piece (fyi its broken - had to find it elsewhere :)

It is amazing to see what our public school system has turned into. No arts, failing districts and standards.... children acting like heathens...

unschooling has never been a better option for our childrens futures.

hi, I am just looking into the idea of homeschooling and unschooling as an option for my children, but as you can imagine, having been raised in an environment of grades, expectations set by adults, schedules and strict discipline I am not sure how to best get my head around the idea. I am also very curious as to how one incorporates discipline in a home where unschooling is going on. I ask this question as I imagine it takes a pretty relaxed and patient parent to unschool. I know that my personality is one that expects "proper behaviour" and likes things done promptly, orderly... etc. None of these things am I proud of.... The idea of unschooling is very much appealing to me in many ways because I get excited about the better parent I can become because of it. Can you shed light on some of these issues for me? Books, resources, and of course your personal experiences? Please email if you have a chance. With deepest thanks, jenny

Our adoption also took place in 2003, our children were 5, 8 and in fostercare. Over the last seven years we have tried many therapists, IEPs, behavior modifications etc. and find ourselves pulling our hair out. We had no idea in 2003 what RAD was, and how it impacts families of adoption. We rec'd no serivces related to RAD until 2009....Out of instinct we brought our children home to homeschool 3 years ago. Not knowing how...I used my education degree to formulate our homeschool currc.
After buying soo many books, and software packages I have recently decided to throw in the towel and try unschooling. Our therapist has told us our 12 year old son is passively defiant and has determined that he will do no schooling of any kind. This to someone who has spent her whole life teaching is unthinkable, and has been my downfall.
I am reading "The unschooling handbook" by Mary Griffith at this time and trying to figure out how to do this....
When I stumbled across your website and saw you had been there done that, I had to write and see if there was anyway you could help mentor me in my homeschool journey.
We are now a family of 6. My husband & I married 19 years, our two adopted kids 12 & 15 and our two homegrown kids 4 and 2.
